About the CCEO
The California Center for Employee Ownership (CCEO) provides information and resources to promote a better understanding of employee ownership in California. Our resources can help you determine if employee ownership is a good option for your company, whether you're looking to sell all or part of your business, create a market for company shares, engage your employees, attract and retain talent, or are just interested in the concept.
Anthony Mathews is the director of the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management, UC San Diego. He joined the non-profit institute dedicated to promoting employee ownership and entrepreneurship after retiring from a nearly 30-year-long career as one of the best-known ESOP and employee ownership experts in the country. Tony has served as a consultant to hundreds of ESOP companies through his positions at some of the most respected consulting and administration firms in the country. Prior to his retirement, Tony served as a vice president and senior consultant with the Principal Financial Group.
As the outreach coordinator for the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), Timothy Garbinsky works with volunteers, allied organizations, and the press to creatively and effectively disseminate information about employee ownership and advance the NCEO's mission. He earned his BA in English from Duke University in 2009 and has since worked as a content creator and an educator, skills which he will transfer to the NCEO. Originally from the D.C. metropolitan area, Tim has lived, worked, and studied in three continents over the past decade, cultivating a passion for other cultures and all peoples.
President, Mountain Hardware and Sports
Doug Wright is the President of Mountain Hardware and Sports. Mountain Hardware is a 100% employee owned company with Ace Hardware stores in Truckee and Blairsden, California as well as a rental equipment business, Truckee Rents, in Truckee. The Mountain Hardware ESOP was formed in 2001 and completed the acquisition of 100% of the company stock in 2013. Doug served as Vice President and ESOP Trustee from its inception and became President of the company 2013. He serves on the Board of Directors at Mountain Hardware and Lithotype, a 100% employee owned company. He is also very active with the ESOP Association serving on the Steering Committee of the California/Western States chapter (CAWS).
Chariman & General Manager, ATA Engineering
Jeff Young is one of the founding members of ATA Engineering, a San Diego-based company that is recognized as a leader in the development of innovative test and analysis methods for aerospace and defense structures. Jeff’s role at ATA is to recruit highly committed and talented employee-owners and create a work environment to enable them to thrive. ATA Engineering is 100% employee-owned.
President and CEO, CMC Rescue
A fifth-generation native of California, Rich Phillips initially became involved in CMC Rescue when he met the company's founder, James Frank, while they were engineering students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Following graduation while working in a variety of sales, marketing and general manager positions, Rich continued as an occasional consultant for CMC Rescue. In 1994, after 20 years of experience with Fortune 500 companies, Rich joined CMC Rescue full time as Executive Vice President and became President and CEO in 2009.
Chariman of the Board of Directors, LeFiell Manufacturing Company
George joined LeFiell Manufacturing Company in 1962, and is currently serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Founded in 1930, LeFiell is based in Santa Fe Springs and serves the commercial airplane, defense and aerospace industries. The company established one of the country's first ESOPs in 1974, and is currently 100% employee-owned. In addition to being Chairman of LeFiell, George has been active in the ESOP Association.
Chairman, CEO and President, KAPCO
Andrew Todhunter currently serves as the Chairman, CEO and President of KAPCO, a 100% employee-owned company involved in the manufacture and distribution of aircraft parts. Andrew joined KAPCO in March 2001 and has held the position of President since October 2001 and Chairman and CEO since 2010. He has served on the Steering Committee of the California/ Western States (CAWS) Chapter of The ESOP Association. He continues to serve on The ESOP Association's Board of Governors and was named the Outstanding Member of the Board of Governors in 2012.
